College Lacrosse 2011 – Defensive Tips

Square Up

Right Button – Use the Right Button to square up the ball carrier. The Right Bumper will also give you a slight “auto defense” feel that you see in FIFA

Goalie Save

Click Left Thumbstick – As the ball carrier is shooting click the Left Thumbstck to save the ball. If you click too early, the goalie will be at a disadvantage. You can only use the click save once every three seconds. (Hint: The goalies icon under his feet will turn white during a “user save”)

Speed Burst

Left Trigger - Speed bursting with the Left Trigger is a MUST. If you aren’t using speed burst pretty much the entire time on defense your game is going to struggle.

Speed Boost Bar – Watch the “speed bar” above the players name to know how much speed burst you have left. Speed burst regenerates once you stop using it.

Stick Checks

A Button – The A Button throws a big one handed poke check. The poke check is the most effective when your opponent is switching hands, passing, or shooting. (Hint: Tapping the A Button too rapidly will increase the chances of a penalty being called.)

B Button – The B Button throws a wrap check. The wrap check is the most effective when your opponent is roll dodging.

Right Button + A/B Button – Squaring up the player with the ball by holding the Right Button and then using the A/B Buttons to throw stick checks is the most effective ways to land stick checks.

Body Checks

Right Joystick – The Right Joystick allows you to throw a pretty aggressive crosse check. The crosse check can be used to dislodge the ball or to knock your opponent over.

Right Joystick + Left Trigger – Speed bursting with the Left Trigger and then pushing the Right Joystick Up is the most effective way to lay out the player with the ball.

Width Control

Up/Down DPad – Up and Down on the Dpad allows your to make your defense pack it in or play out wide. Keeping your defense tight is the easiest way to stop the opposing defense from getting to the middle of the cage. That said, if you are losing and need the ball back, have your defense press out and put pressure on the ball.

Double Team ON/OFF

Y Button – If you ever hope to have a chance against a good offensive player in CL11 you must utilize the double team by turning your double team On by pressing the Y Button. One press of the  Y Button will send a second player to the ball. The second press of the Y Button will have one person recover back. (Hint: Your double team is turned off every time the ball hits the ground, goes out of bounds, or possession changes.)

Switching Players

Right Trigger – The ability to switch players quickly on defense is key to always staying in front of the ball and keeping the offensive player away from the center of the goal.
