As the only lacrosse video game series, it delivers true-to-life lacrosse gameplay, online multiplayer, and incredible lacrosse action.

“The College Lacrosse franchise has been recognized as one of the top indie sports games in realism, gameplay, and graphics. We’re looking to stay at the forefront by continuing to push College Lacrosse through 2012 as an indie game and then onto Playstation 3, Wii, iOS, and Android in 2013 as a full retail title,” said Carlo Sunseri, Founder of Crosse Studio and Assistant Coach at Robert Morris University. “With enhanced online multiplayer, player movement, and more attention to controls than ever before, College Lacrosse 2012 is prepared to deliver an amazing lacrosse experience for only $5.”

College Lacrosse continues to push the game of lacrosse out to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. College Lacrosse 2012 has added several new features that play a huge role in bringing the lacrosse experience to life. Improved player detail and animations, re-coded online multiplayer, better shooting control, new dodging, and defensive controls help immerse players in a newly updated lacrosse video game.

“College Lacrosse 2012 is a great improvement over last years video game. Lacrosse fans deserve to have an updated video game in 2012 and we have done everything in our power to make it happen for them,” said Carlo Sunseri. “Furthermore, we have started development of College Lacrosse video games for 2013 through 2016. We’re going to continue to put in the time and invest everything necessary to get a lacrosse video game to the level of the other sports titles.”

College Lacrosse 2012 will be available in time for Memorial Day Weekend featuring major updates to online multi-player, player movement, controls, and gameplay for only $5 on Xbox LIVE.

“What I noticed while watching the [College Lacrosse 2011] video is that you’ve focused a lot on making the players’ cradling/passing motions realistic, such as side arm passes, multiple types of dodges, and reactions to checks. What it needs is more variety of these while also(I know itll be hard) improving the natural flow of each character. What I mean by this is that when someone gets checked or hit, and they fall over, maybe they get dewanded, or fall to the side, roll over, fall on their stomach, not just lay on their back which i saw most of when someone landed a body check. In addition to this, the movement of the characters is rather, well how to say it, computerized. To truly make the game better, characters dont move to a preset joystick, they have delay times, they slip, they run at different speeds, they dont follow a sinlge spin route, they duck, they jump, all of these other things that if they were incorporated provide the innovation lacrosse is today, because when you make a big play, it’s never the same, you do what you need to in the instinct, which allows for combinations of all these things to make either a sick goal, or a great clear/save. Be able to cutback(splitdodge) while running. Next, the ball needs to be more noticeable. Maybe highlighted with a twinkle or sparkle when passed, just so you can see it’s clear route on a pass/shot. Next, ground balls arent just picked up the same way, they get kicked around, the indian pick up, etc. The communication between players makes it realistic, and they computer characters have good reactions programmed into them, and another cool add would be a shot trigger, where you could control the your stick with a joystick and control if its sidearm, has a fake, low to low, low to high, high to low left, etc. Middy back option is good, make sure to incorporate that. Fouls are a big part, make sure slash’s occur periodically, and another big this is PLAYs. Have a preset venue of plays either customizeable by the consumer or you, that you can toggle and set into action while in the game, with cutters, screens, fakes, dodges and more. This will allow for more options in the attack side of the game that players will love, since they can create their own big plays that may or may not work. Otherwise it looks pretty good, dodges were a good addition.”

Wastes Entire Day at Work. (Click to read the review from the source.)

Lax fans have been harping for a lacrosse video game since Sega Genesis introduced the world to NHL 94 and FIFA International Soccer in 1995. The game play and graphics of those games could easily have been converted from those sports to lacrosse, both the outdoor and indoor versions. I recall spending many a night hooked up with several buddies to the Sega 4-way controller and playing both of these games for hours on end. I also recall realizing that if I didn’t put down the controller, get off of the couch and get a job there was little chance of ever meeting girls. Needless to say I got my act together and found a nice girl. I sold that couch and got a job as well. And now that I have several kids there’s no time for video games. Wow, full-circle complete. So, how can I blog about a game I can’t access?
No worries, bring in the 24 Seven Lax Game Testing Team. Meet Jeffery Butts and Tony Montana, the foremost authorities on all things gaming related. You wouldn’t believe what we had to do at 24 Seven Lax to get these guys on our team, not to mention getting them fired up to play a lax game. Tony usually won’t play any games in which shooting law enforcement isn’t involved and Mr. Butts likes all of the titles of his games to begin with “Gran”, “Final”, or “Call of”. Oh, have I not mentioned that Mr. Butts and Mr. Montana do not play lacrosse? Never have and probably never will? They don’t understand the rules either. So why am I using these guys and spending a small fortune?

The 24 Seven Lax Game Team after 14 hours of testing and no Red Bull. So far, every review of Crosse Studio’s new indie game release, “College Lacrosse 2011″ has been written by lacrosse players. That’s no good. They’re biased reviews for the most part. In order for a larger game producer such as EA Sports to release a college lacrosse game on the level of Madden 2011 or NHL 2011 the game must appeal to a broader market. Lets face it, the majority of the video game market these days is comprised of non-lacrosse players. Therefore, the game must appeal to the average Joe, or Jeff and yes, even Tony Montana. Without a large market of interested buyers, no company will mass produce a high level lax video game. Now that you understand my madness, lets get to their reviews.

Lets start with Jeff Butts

Coming from someone who does not play Lacrosse the game is very entertaining. I liken it to playing an EA sports game without the fancy production. There are no bells and whistles, like managing everything from the ground up, but for me that’s just fine. Jumping into the game was easy and the action starts immediately. Pick your team and uniform and that’s it.

Face-offs were too easy to win. Always winning just wasn’t that fun (yeah right, did I just say that?). I learned early you must cradle the ball running down the field or you will lose it. The controls are very good. I was expecting them to be slow and non responsive, but was very surprised how well they actually worked. Within 2 minutes I pretty much had the game down, short of knowing any actual rules. I’m assuming the circle around the goal is not meant to be stepped in? Pretty sure I got a penalty for that, but maybe it was something else. It’s a shame this probably won’t be picked up by a big production house. The game is really fun and easy to play.

I would recommend it to anyone that likes sports games.

Apparently all players must pass through TSA screening before entering the field

Now Tony Montana

Considering I do not know anything about Lacrosse except that you beat the guy carrying the ball, College Lacrosse 2011 is a very entertaining game. It does seem, on a basic level, to have everything necessary to get the feel that you are playing in a real lacrosse game. The game is very responsive to controls. So much in fact, that I never lost a face off against the computer. Passing does seem easy mainly because a white line shows who the ball will travel towards. This does keep the action alive while running down the field versus the ball spending most of the time on the ground due to errant passes. Sprinting does work but seems to be a bit of a joke. Yes, you must cradle the ball while running down the field but does it really need to look like you have a broom handle up your a** while you’re doing it? Didn’t think so. When taking shots the angles are pretty precise. It is easy to place the ball well beyond your target if you shoot off angle.

On defense, the controls are about the same. Switching players may take a few tries to get the player you want but this is typical of most on-the-fly type sports games. Checks and pokes work fine except when you are behind another player. It seems that 100% of the time if you try any defensive tactics while you are behind the offensive player it will result in a penalty. While I am sure this is true most of the time, I would prefer that occasionally a legal defensive move could be made while chasing an offensive player from behind.

The game does remind me of the late 90s EA sports titles . The game is easy enough for someone with little or no gaming skill or lacrosse skill to be entertained and play with their friends for hours.

Recommend: Yes

Shocker. Honestly, I thought they’d hate it. Their review makes me want to go purchase an Xbox and give it a try. But then again I haven’t owned a gaming system since Super Nintendo! I’m so out of touch with technology these days, it’s quite sad. I still sport one of those old Zach Morris from “Saved By the Bell” cell phones. I should be calling in air strikes with this thing.

Hello, is this 24 Seven Lax? Yes, Md did get hosed on selection Sunday!
Anyway check out College Lacrosse 2011 on Xbox Live and let me know what you think. I’ll be sure to forward all dissenting comments to Mr. Butts and Mr. Montana.

"The game is growing, but the market isn't as big as hockey, football, baseball or soccer, so you have to keep it low-cost," Sunseri said. "You can't go out and spend $12 million and have a 40-man team, but right now, I'm in the process of trying to build a smaller team based in Pittsburgh to develop the game.

"To get it sanctioned through the NCAA -- that's the ultimate goal," Sunseri said. "To have all those universities included, that would be a big step forward for the sport of lacrosse and for our company."

Carlo Sunseri didn’t have a budget. He didn’t have much financial backing, either.

But in 2005, that didn’t stop the then-sophomore at Robert Morris University from pitching the idea that would become his life’s ambition: to produce a lacrosse video game.

“I was in college and e-mailed a production company to ask how much it would cost to make a lacrosse video game,” said Sunseri, of Rennerdale. “We had a basic conversation, but at that point, everything exceeded my budget.”

No wonder. He was a college sophomore, and he had a budget?

“I liked to pretend I had a budget,” Sunseri joked.

Sunseri, 26, can’t help but laugh when he thinks back to 2005, when he thought a haphazard sales pitch would cause a few executives to jump out of their chairs.

But Sunseri transformed his proposal into his own company, Crosse Studio LLC, which recently released its fourth lacrosse video game.

“I’ve always had a passion for video games,” said Sunseri. “I’ve also always had a passion for lacrosse and business. This sort of rolls them together.”

After playing high school lacrosse at Mt. Lebanon, Sunseri went to Providence College in Rhode Island, then transferred to RMU, where as a midfielder from 2005-07, he scored 59 points, enough to place him eighth on the Colonials’ all-time list.

But as much as Sunseri loved lacrosse, serving as an assistant coach at RMU from 2008-09, he always envisioned doing something with his sports management degree.

In early 2009, Sunseri decided to start his own production company and contacted Jonathan “Fritz” Ackerley, a successful video game programmer, about his idea of producing what would turn out to be the first-ever lacrosse video game.

“The lacrosse community has been demanding a video game for such a long time,” said Kirk Klett, a lawyer and friend of Sunseri, who has assisted him with licensing and contract issues. “We’re really a video game generation, and we’ve always played the NHL hockey games — the Madden football games — but there’s never been a lacrosse game.”

There is now

In November 2009, Crosse Studio launched its first game: College Lacrosse 2010, which like all of Sunseri’s games, is available through the X-Box Live Marketplace. Each game costs $5 to download, of which Microsoft gets about 30 percent, netting Sunseri around $3.50 per game.

Five months later, Sunseri and his crew released National Lacrosse League 2010, which mimicked the NLL’s faster-paced, indoor style. Unlike the first game, this one featured actual players, as opposed to the fictitious ones Sunseri had to use because College Lacrosse was not sanctioned through the NCAA.

College Lacrosse 2011 was released in February, and National League Lacrosse 2011 came out on April 15. In total, the four games have been purchased for download about 95,500 times.

“They’re really fun, playable games,” Ackerley said.

Sunseri does not program the games; instead, he hires programmers such as Ackerley, to whom Sunseri submits his ideas and suggestions.

Sunseri is chiefly responsible for how the game plays — whether the shooting and hitting are realistic and user-friendly — and works full-time out of the basement office in his home.

“He has ideas about what he wants to do, and he goes and gets them done,” Ackerley said. “He convinced me that this was the right thing to do, and it turned out it was. There was a good gap in the market, we got the game done and got tremendous numbers.”

One hurdle remains: to secure the necessary licensing for College Lacrosse through the NCAA, allowing for the inclusion of such powerhouses as Johns Hopkins, Syracuse and Duke.

Sunseri thinks this will happen. There’s even a Facebook page, which he administrates, devoted to gaining one million followers as a way to petition gaming companies such as EA Sports to pick up on the idea.

“The game is growing, but the market isn’t as big as hockey, football, baseball or soccer, so you have to keep it low-cost,” Sunseri said. “You can’t go out and spend $12 million and have a 40-man team, but right now, I’m in the process of trying to build a smaller team based in Pittsburgh to develop the game.

“To get it sanctioned through the NCAA — that’s the ultimate goal,” Sunseri said. “To have all those universities included, that would be a big step forward for the sport of lacrosse and for our company.”
